Fly Fishing Asp

FLY FISHING FOR ASP                        The Loud Attacker It’s a fish that makes you really excited. When this predator attacks small fish, it looks like the two crocodiles are fighting on the water surface. There are other predator-fish in Europe, but none of these can compare to the  only cyprinid-fish-eater. Huchen, pike, wels, trout…they are too quiet, slow and unattractive attackers compares to asp. “Crazy” asp is banging, twirling, jumping, tail-walking…and doing it very often. Sometimes, I can’t understand how other fish in the pool can live with that hooligan.   The Fair Fighter Asp don’t use shelters to attack like other European predators.   It’s May and a fascinating fishery is right ahead of us! Thus every year from mid of may til the end of June there are chances throughout Europe to catch a large brown trout on a dry fly. It is MAYFLY time! You can find various well know “MAYFLY” rivers where large hatches of the Ephemera Danica happen every year. In Germnay the river Wiesent might be the most famous mayfly river in Germany. It has long fly fishing tradtions. But you can find many more streams where the mayfly hatches bring up large brown trout to the surface. Mostly those fantastic insects are found chalkstreams. Then you can see their glimpse in their eyes. Sometimes you can hear stories where you think this wasn’t possible. Main characters in those stories are the large, old brown trout which usually do not feed on the surface. This time of ...

Fly fishing for chub and trout with terrestrial patterns

Fly fishing for chub and trout with terrestrial patterns As we approach the late summer holidays, there’s no better time to try a spot of fly fishing with larger terrestrial flies. Dom Garnett reports on some exciting recent sport. “For any angler who doesn’t relish using tiny flies and the finest tippets, mid to late summer needn’t be all about the small stuff these days. In fact, some of the best days of all are to be had when things get really bushy and overgrown on the rivers, and land-borne insects are at their most prolific. In the past, I would raid smaller trout streams with flies like the classic Coch-y-Bonddu or perhaps pick off a few fish with flying ants at this time of year. But these days, the real cream of the terrestrial season is on mixed waters as far as I’m concerned, and this means chub as much as trout. Taking cover Find dense cover, or even riverbanks bordering on open meadowland, in July and August, and you will find a rich stock of “accidentals” that find ...
